Irabu to Throw for Lynx

Ottawa Lynx fans are being treated to star sightings on a daily basis late in this 2001 season.

Veteran outfielder Tim Raines joined the team Monday and will be joined by injured Montreal Expos pitcher Hideki Irabu for Wednesday’s game against the Rochester Red Wings.
The 32-year-old Japan native is recovering from a strained right elbow and hasn’t played in the majors since June 13, but will start on the mound for the Lynx tonight.
Irabu will likely pitch three innings as part of his second rehabilitation assignment with the Triple-A affiliate this season. Back in May, Irabu started three games for the Lynx before rejoining the Expos. He went 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA, walking three batters and striking out 17 in 19 1/3 innings.
During the first seven-inning game of Tuesday’s doubleheader — a 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Red Wings — Raines faced his son Tim Raines Jr. for the first time in a professional regular-season game.
Playing as the designated hitter, Raines Sr. went 1-3 with a lead-off double in his first at bat, a run and a walk. His son tended centre field and singled in his first at bat before stealing second base as his father did so many times in his professional career.
Lynx hurler T.J. Tucker (3-5) went all eight innings and was deserving of a win after allowing only five hits, striking out five and walking one. He earned only one run against, but four errors charged to teammates - including a pair against catcher Jimmy Gonzalez, one on second baseman Henry Mateo and third baseman John Cotton - led to the loss.
Offensively, the Lynx managed only four hits and stranded nine baserunners.
First pitch of Wednesday night’s matchup is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at JetForm Park.
