LIVE BY REQUEST — k.d. lang

Live sounds lifeless

This A&E concert series seems destined to be the Unplugged of the new millennium.

Great — another trendy, gimmick-based music show that neuters rock into safe family entertainment for couch potatoes.

It doesn't come much safer than this instalment from Alberta-born popster k.d. lang.

Her 14-song set is loaded with absolute torch 'n' twang hits from throughout her career — everything from 1987's Three Cigarettes in an Ashtray to last year's Summerfling is represented, along with Crying, Black Coffee, Constant Craving and more.

Every note is impeccably played, flawlessly sung, lushly produced — and totally devoid of the raw energy and life-force k.d. used to exude in her shows.

Until Live by Request decides to live up to its name — hey k.d., let's hear you tackle Whole Lotta Love — we request they keep discs like this to themselves.
